products travellers can now pre-book before they even leave home, through a new duty free platform launched this year.
Pre-order is quietly becoming a sustainability tool, just not for our category.
Short one this week, the topic's genuinely interesting but doesn't touch our own category much, so no need to stretch it. MakeMyTrip and Adani Airport Holdings launched an online duty free pre-booking service this April, letting travellers browse and pay for over 14,000 products across 100-plus brands before they've even left home. ANA renewed and expanded its own in-flight pre-order service in July. The pattern is clear, pre-order gives operators real demand visibility ahead of time, which in principle reduces overproduction and excess stock, the same logic that's driven pre-order adoption in food and retail more broadly for years.
This one hasn't come up directly in our own buyer conversations, and honestly I don't expect it to often. It's most relevant to food, beverage and beauty, where perishability and overstock are genuine operational problems. Tech accessories don't carry the same urgency here, a cable doesn't go off. Worth knowing about regardless, it's part of the same efficiency conversation as everything else in this newsletter, just a different lever.
Not much to add on the sustainability angle specifically, but we'd genuinely like to help customers bring more tech into their own pre-order experience where it's useful, whether that's how a product gets discovered, reserved or collected. If that's something you're thinking about, happy to talk it through.
A bit more info, as always.
